No April’s Fools jokes here. Sorrynotsorry, I’m not a fan. (Although Google Maps, IKEA, and ThinkGeek.com are doing it well, I must say.)
YES, Bleacke Spirit (Bleacke Shifters 4) will be coming soon. NO, I don’t have a date yet, I’m sorry. I HAVE to get The Great Turning books 2 and 3 edits done first. Once those are finished, then I can estimate a date.
Here’s the thing–those are all being self-published. I cannot tell my editor, “Hey, sorry, I know you have a fixed schedule, a LOT of other paying clients who’ve booked MONTHS in advance, and I can’t afford to PAY you extra to shuffle all those other PAYING projects around for people, but can we swap the order of these out?” It’s NOT a simple matter of just rearranging things. We’re in the middle of edits right now.
I painstakingly edit (OCD, remember) to an ANNOYING LEVEL my self-pubbed stuff, and I’m PAYING for that, out of my OWN pocket. My publisher-published stuff, THEY pay the editors, and they give me fixed deadlines that, if I don’t meet them, I do not get paid. It’s not negotiable. Period. So, needless to say, I HAVE to keep writing for my publisher or my mortgage company and other bill collectors will be knocking on my door. It’s not that they’re less well-edited, because they are well-edited and I have great editors at my publisher. But it’s a larger production schedule and I’m just one cog in that schedule. If I miss my deadlines for editing, books get pushed back (mine) and I do not get paid until later, meaning I’m fucked.
I don’t know about you, but I cannot afford to NOT get paid. I am NOT rich. I’m working 60+ hours a week doing this, too. Yesterday, I was in my chair at my desk from 9am until 3am THIS MORNING. (That is NOT a typo.) I didn’t get a shower. I hadn’t brushed my fricking hair since TUESDAY (not coincidentally, also the last time I left the fricking house).
Why? To get a book finished and turned in to my publisher.
So I can get PAID. Why? That’s pretty easy math.
I REALLY, truly appreciate all of you who are being so patient, but to the person who chided me for “writing too many books” and suggesting I slow up so I can focus on edits for ONE book–I’m sorry, but this is my livelihood. This IS my evil day job. I have contractual obligations to meet with my publisher. I don’t just shit a self-pubbed book out my ass and plop it up on KDP a few hours later. (I wish I could say that’s an April Fool’s joke, but no, it’s not. Someone actually wrote that to me, wanting me to drop EVERYTHING to focus on edits for one book without any consideration to all the other factors and logistics surrounding that.)
And self-pubbed books get picked apart worse than publisher-pubbed books. So I’m fortunate I have a patient editor (who also does this for a living and who has deadlines and other clients) who works with me. But I cannot just order them to drop everything so we can focus on something else. #thatsnothowthisworks Because THEY have other paying clients who have paid for their time, and THEY have schedules to meet, too.
Once I have an updated timeline, I’ll be announcing it, absolutely. I’ll know more once we get TGT 2 & 3 done and out the door.
Sorry for the rant.
On to happier news.
