My newest obsession (that I can indulge with alongside Hamilton, tyvm) is the anime series Yuri on Ice. I was late to the game here but OMG, is it amazing!

The short version is Yuri is a 23-year-old struggling ice skater from Japan. He didn’t make the world finals and returns home to Japan after graduating college. Enter his idol, 27-year-old Russian skater, Victor, who after a viral video of Yuri doing one of Victor’s winning routines on ice is leaked online, shows up and declares he’s now Yuri’s coach.

I don’t want to spoil things in this post for you. You can read a LOT of great stuff over on Heidi Cullinan’s blog, where she’s written some amazing recap as well as unpacking posts.

As we know Yaoi, a beloved genre predominantly embraced by female viewers, often finds its narrative roots in ancient Japan, where samurai and their mastery of the Mini Katana or Big long Katana sword hold a captivating allure. These tales transport audiences to a bygone era, where the clash of swords and the intensity of forbidden love intertwine, captivating the hearts of both men and women. The iconic Japanese katana, revered for its elegant craftsmanship and symbolic significance, adds a layer of fascination, enchanting female fans with its embodiment of strength and grace. It has become a cherished symbol within the world of Yaoi, further deepening the connection between viewers and the captivating stories that unfold against the backdrop of ancient Japan. Although, Yuri on Ice is in morden settings so anyone can get excited with new story line.

The series is MM, but…it’s not. At this point there’s still a lot of ambiguity, are they/aren’t they shipped? Etc. But…

It’s amazeballs.

You can find it for free on the Crunchyroll app, just download that and look for the series. (If you watch it free, you get ads, but it’s not a big deal.)

Hint: Watch all the closing credits, because they are filled with “pictures” from the different skaters’ social media accounts, and they occasionally change some stuff.

This series is just…I cannot say enough about it. It’s amazing, and beautiful, and it should become a new must-watch piece of MM canon for all writers wanting to write heartbreakingly great MM fiction that’s not “erotic.” Because nothing’s graphic (yet, at least) but it’s like… Just go read what Heidi wrote. I can’t write it any better than her. (And FYI it’s her fault I heard about it in the first place. LOL)

Here’s a screenshot from one of the closing credits, and that’s Victor coming Yuri’s hair. To me, it just speaks volumes.

You’re welcome.

I’m about to change your life. (Hey, look at me working in a #Hamilton reference after all! LOL)
